  MMF bisexual romance

  Rock. Need. Love.

  Dev

  I’m not looking for love.

I spend most of my time working in a busy hotel, and that’s how I like it. When my rock star best friend comes to town, a big secret comes along with her. Maybe my single, uncomplicated life isn’t what I really need.

Now I’m starting to want what I didn’t know I was missing.

  Cora

My band made it big. Fast.

And our latest tour is rolling into Chicago. I can’t wait to see my best friend in the world. I miss him every day. When I introduce him to my boyfriend, everything changes in ways I never expected.

  Mind. Blown.

  Bryce

  I’m in love with Cora.

Have been from the moment I met her. Working sound for Disarray’s tour is the best gig I’ve ever had, because she and I are together all the time. But when someone from my past lands right back in the middle of my life, a big secret catches up with me too.

I didn’t know that I need more than what I already have.

  But I do.

  Chapter 1

  Dev

Nothing’s going to get in the way of me meeting Cora tonight. There’s twenty minutes left in my shift. Exactly twenty. I’m drumming my fingers on the counter as I try to will time to speed up. I’m going to be walking out of here at the moment my shift ends. That’ll raise a few eyebrows. Everyone relies on me to help out with anything that comes up at work, even when I’m officially off the clock. Usually I’m okay with it.

  Not tonight.

Out of the corner of my eye, I glimpse someone striding over. Instead of looking up from the monitor right away, I sign out of the system first. Nineteen minutes to go. I’ve already turned down two requests for help with issues that are way outside my area, and in spite of the twinge of guilt that’s still annoying me, I’m fine with doing it again.

“Devin.” Whipping my head up at Randall Palmer’s commanding voice, I swallow hard. Damn it. No matter what he wants now, I can’t turn down my boss. I do pride myself on being ready and responsive to anyone that approaches me. It’s not just that it’s part of my job. I like to go the extra mile with friendliness and approachability.

  Except for tonight.

I’m far from being in that frame of mind tonight.

“Hello, Mr. Palmer.” I’m trying hard to force my annoyance into a welcoming smile. There’s no way he’ll want to have a meeting with me this late in the day. At least I hope not. The owner of the hotel isn’t known for being brief in any situation, especially in private meetings.

“Spencer Preston is going to be arriving earlier than expected. Nine o’clock instead of ten. I trust you’ll be ready?”

“Of course.” My jaw clenches in spite of myself. “His arrival is my priority. Everything’s in place. There won’t be any problems at all tomorrow.”

“Good man.” Mr. Palmer shows the barest hint of a smile. It’s the kind of smile that usually comes right before he asks for a favour. I steel myself, but his phone rings before he can speak. I exhale in relief when my boss walks away as he answers.

The quiet lobby is starting to buzz with voices. The airport shuttles must be arriving. Music fans are filling up the space, excited for their weekend up in the city to see their favorite band. My hotel runs package deals to attract people who travel here for big arena shows, and it works.

This weekend it’s Disarray, the hottest new band on the planet. Their Chicago shows have been sold out for months and the hotel’s been booked up just as long. Tonight’s going to be crazy busy here. I’m not staying late.

“You want to go for a beer when we’re done?” Austin breaks into my thoughts as the crowd starts to stream towards the front desk.

“I can’t.” I step away from the counter so people don’t approach me to check in. “I’ve got plans. Remember?”

“Cora?” Austin asks in an undertone. “That’s tonight?”

“Yeah.” Cora’s my best friend. I told Austin about Cora before she skyrocketed up to fame, and Austin’s kept it a secret that I know her.

Disarray is Cora’s band. Their first show isn’t for another couple nights, but the hotel’s already filling up with their more devoted fans. I still can’t quite get my head around it. Cora. My childhood friend. And the lead singer for Disarray.

“So what are you going to do?” Austin’s running a credit card as he checks a couple in.

“What do you mean?” I type my password into a terminal beside Austin’s. I can spend my last few minutes helping Austin with check-ins.

“Are you going to go for it with her?”

“We’re just friends. There’s nothing else going on.”

“Yeah. Right. If you say that enough times, that’ll make it true.” Austin shoots me an annoying smirk just as a group of five reaches the desk. So I can’t reply. He thinks I’m into Cora. I’m not. We’re just friends. Nothing more. Never h
ave been.

“Welcome to the White Stone hotel,” Austin says as my phone sounds. It’s Mr. Palmer.

“Devin, will you come by my office when you have a moment?”

“I’ll be right up.” I curse inwardly. A private meeting. This can’t be happening now.

Leaving Austin to handle the new arrivals, I take the stairs two at a time. I don’t want to waste any time waiting for an elevator up to the second floor. Mr. Palmer is famous for his long meetings, even when he’s short on time himself.

There’s no way I’ll be able to walk out of a meeting with the boss at the moment my shift ends. It’s going to be tricky, but I’m going to have to do anything I can to keep him on track.

The door to his office is open, so I give a cursory knock as I walk in.

“Ah, Devin.” Mr. Palmer gestures at me to take a seat. “I’m sure you’re busy so I won’t keep you. But there’s something I need to know. I’m sure you’ve heard that the White Stone hotel group will be expanding. We’re going to announce our newest location soon. I’ll want my best people to be running the new hotel. Of course, that includes you. I’m thinking the position of general manager will suit you very well. Are you interested?”

The rumors of a new location have been swirling around for months, but I never paid any attention. The possibility of being promoted to that level is something I never even considered.

It would mean I’d have a stable, secure career. Which is everything I’ve ever wanted. It’s what I’ve been working so hard for, ever since Mr. Palmer hired me straight after I graduated from the hospitality program.

He’s waiting for my answer. “I’m interested, sir. Definitely.”

“That’s great to hear. We’ll speak again when I can give you more details. That’s it for now.”

My thoughts are all over the place as I close his office door behind me. A promotion. Running a new hotel. That’s not at all what I expected.

Not to mention, a meeting with Mr. Palmer that didn’t take forever. Bonus. I hurry to my office, managing to make it there before anyone can delay me with another fire that needs putting out.

Quickly I shed my uniform and put on a pair of black pants. And the blue button-down shirt that Cora told me she liked on her last visit. She said something about it matching my eyes, although I don’t see it. Whatever. She likes it.

I duck into the back stairwell, the one that leads out into the alley. I don’t even want to take a moment to say goodbye to anyone. I need a quick escape.

It’s a bad time of night. All the cabs that shoot by are already full. Pacing back and forth, I get impatient and pull out my phone. There aren’t any cars close enough to get me where I need to be on time.

Screw it. Even if I do get a cab or car now, traffic’s moving way too sluggish to risk it. There’s an L station only a few blocks away. Shoving my phone into my pocket, I start to wind through the slow-moving crowds lingering on the sidewalk.

As I stride towards the station, my mind goes back to what Randall offered me. Well, not officially offered. Not yet. There’s nothing I want more than to get a promotion up to management level. Technically I’m a manager now, but it’s really just a title. I’m on the lowest possible rung of the ladder. The only reason I left the music industry in the first place was so I could get into a stable career with a good income. This is it. The next step, and it’s a big one. The one that’s going to lead somewhere very good.

Cora’s going to be happy for me. I can’t wait to tell her.

I get to Koal right on time. I’ve never been here before, but it’s a really nice, upscale bar. A quick scan of the dimly-lit space and there’s no Cora yet. I head to the back, picking out the most private booth there is.

I still can’t quite get my head around the idea that Cora isn’t able to go out without getting recognized and swarmed by her fans now. She told me she has to think about security and privacy practically every time she steps outside.

  It’s hard to imagine.

A waiter appears at my table the moment I sit down. I haven’t even looked at the menu. “I’ll have whatever’s on tap.” He disappears with a nod of his head.

Settling back in the soft plush seat, I pull out my phone to see if Cora’s texted. Nothing so far.

I take a moment to check out the space. It’s moderately busy, still mostly full of business types finishing their after-work drinks before the evening crowd really takes over.

It’s a lot more of a low-key kind of place than the clubs we usually hit when Cora visits. Instead of picking out a hot new band for us to check out this time, Cora asked me to find a lounge where we could chill out and talk. It’s not like her to want to hang out in a place like this. But it makes sense that she’d want some down time on one of her few nights off. I don’t much care where I see her. Just that I do.

Although the atmosphere isn’t working on me. Even the beer isn’t doing it. I’m way more keyed up than I should be. Not sure why.

Maybe it’s because I haven’t seen Cora in such long time. She’s been super-busy since her band rocketed into the spotlight, so she hasn’t visited as much as usual.

Disarray’s sudden success came as a shock. Not that I don’t know how talented she is. We played in bands together for years. So many great bands fold before they get anywhere, but Cora never gave up. When Chicago didn’t work out for her, she took off for LA. That’s when things really started happening. The only real surprise was how fast it all happened.

She’s gone pretty damn far since we first met back in high school. I was practicing guitar in the school’s music room late one day. I was so absorbed, I didn’t even notice anyone was watching me.

I stood up to take a quick break only to find the tiniest, cutest blonde I’d ever seen. She was sprawled out on a chair, gazing intently at me. I hadn’t seen her around before. That was for sure. I would have remembered her.

“You’re not bad. I’m getting a band together and we want another guitarist. Interested?” Her smile was dazzling enough to make me melt.

  “What do you do?”

  “Lead guitar and vocals.”

“Oh yeah? What do you play, bubble gum pop?”

  “Like KOL, but heavier.”

She didn’t look much like a rocker in her faded denim skirt and plain t-shirt. But I could tell from the way she was checking out my guitar that she was serious.

Skeptical but curious, I went along to check out her practice space.

It was in the basement of her house, small and dark, so cluttered there was only just enough room for the bare-bones drum kit sitting in the corner.

“Your parents actually let you play here?” I glanced around doubtfully.

“Yup. Long as we stop by eight, we’re good. The neighbors are in their 70s and they’ve never complained. They don’t hear well enough to be bothered by the volume. And my dad has some soundproofing behind all this crap.” Cora waved disdainfully at the piles of boxes and junk propped precariously against all four walls.

“My drummer won’t be here for about half an hour. So show me what you got.” Cora’s eyes were defiant as she gazed into mine.

I snorted, raising an eyebrow at her challenge. Making sure my guitar was in tune, I launched into one of my own songs. I was only a few bars in when Cora picked up her guitar and joined me. In an instant, she lit a fire under what I was playing.

  Okay. She had my attention.

Not stopping until the song was done, I tried to hide my amazement that not only could she keep up, she might actually be better than I was.

“Not bad.” I caught her smirk out of the corner of my eye. She was really good, and she knew it. But there wasn’t a trace of arrogance about her.

After the drummer and bassist arrived, we all ended up jamming until Cora’s parents kicked us out. It was easy to see how Cora good was. By the time we stopped playing that night, I’d become part of the band.

That was like a lifetime ago. I set my empty glass down an
d glance around to see where the waiter’s at. And I get an eyeful of Cora.

She always stands out even when she tries not to. But it has nothing to do with being so famous she can hardly go out anywhere without getting mobbed.

She’s a five foot four ball of energy. Even when all she’s doing is walking across a room, she sparkles. Even more so tonight. She’s wearing a simple, curve-hugging black dress that makes her look even sexier than usual. Her trademark heavy silver jewelry catches the light with her every move.

She spots me a couple seconds after I see her. Her face lights up with a big smile as she comes over.

  “Dev!”

Just the sound of her voice makes my heart speed up. She’s my best friend, but our connection goes deeper than that. Nearly every band I’ve ever played in included her. She’s the only person I still know from childhood.

I extract myself from behind the table and Cora flings herself at me. For such a tiny woman, she’s pretty damn strong. I catch her up in a big hug.

“Hey, Cora.” I kiss the top of her head. “Great hair.” I run my hand over her formerly blonde hair. It’s now jet-black and shot through with a handful of subtle pink streaks that shine even in the low light. It totally suits her and it’s really hot.

She rests her head against my chest for a moment. “Dev, there’s someone I want you to meet. This is Bryce.”

We separate from our bear hug. I look over to the tall guy that’s standing behind her and my jaw drops. I can’t believe it.

From the look on his face, Bryce is just as stunned to see me.

  Chapter 2

  Dev

Cora picks up on the weird vibe between Bryce and I right away. “What’s up? Do you two know each other?”

Bryce speaks up first. “We were in audio school together. Back in Seattle. Remember, Dev?”

  As if I could forget.

I grind my teeth. “Sure.” The three of us sit down at the table. “So, are you two touring together?”
